Horner Park Lake

Postby JLIGON on Wed Oct 16, 2013 11:29 am

Making a post to let everyone know that some golfers have been acting like Asses at the park. Some golfers have been throwing rocks and branches into the lake to get Discs out of the lake. Then when they are told by the grounds keeper not to do that they have cussed him out! Someone also pulled a pole out of the ground that was supporting a new tree to try and get their disc out. Any golfers that witness this type of behavior should stop it and police the park for all golfers. Otherwise the Park may do something drastic to protect the lake. Regular disc retrievers are acceptable just don't throw things in the Lake!

Horner Park Lake losing 9 holes

Postby mason on Tue Dec 24, 2013 11:23 am

from http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=5365

All but a handful of the baskets have been pulled for the winter. The park manager said the course is going to be reduced to a 9 hole course next spring. He said it'd be back open in March sometime.

That is a major shame! I guess the club will have to look into getting back the 9 baskets that they purchased for Horner Park via the "Matching Baskets Program"...

The baskets are Innova Discatchers. I spoke with Ed Houston after the Headache Bowl. Seems the Park's Dept and the Park Commissioners are on the same page however, the Park Trustees say they didn't approve/clear the disc golf course. More political backpedaling of people not paying attention or doing their jobs. A lot of work goes into the installation of a new course (planning, meetings, voting, fundraising, materials, and labor). Let's hope that all that effort will not be wasted. The course may return as an 18 hole course but it is possible that it may be pulled entirely. The Club baskets will be returned if they are not used, however, I hope the SICG Club finds a park to re-install them this spring. Gordon Moore and O'Fallon IL were mentioned as possibilities. The STL board will ultimately decide once more is known.

This is a very unfortunate event. But, this goes to show that people have got to be extremely careful when trying to retrieve things from bodies of water. I think this is probably why the parks department had a problem with people retrieving their discs from the lake.

Hopefully all these issues will be resolved. The parks department should also take into account that this unfortunate event happened to a fisherman and not a disc golfer. The holes that were set up around the lake were arguably the best holes on the course.

It is never a good thing to see baskets get pulled from any park. Like Chris K. said, a lot of hard work and volunteerism goes into getting a course installed and it would be a shame to see all that hard work go to waste.

Haven't been out there, but talked to people with knowledge and all baskets are pulled. City wants to have the course redesigned with all basket placements near the water and any tees near a boundary with a homeowner to be moved. This will probably result in the course being a 9 hole and no longer an 18.
