volunteer info?

Postby REDARMY on Fri Mar 20, 2009 9:09 pm

parsing the c-tier thread i think warrants a topic on this subject.

i don't know what needs to be done, but i'm available to help at either sioux or endicott, provided i'm not off in the military by then.

Endicott will need 2 spotters during the rounds. Holes 7 & 12. Pick one and it's yours.

Correct to keep the play moving. You will be more than welcomed to bring your chair/cooler :D /and anything else you would need to spot for the open. If you are open the weekend then I am sure Clanger would pencil you in as a spotter at Endi.

Peace

A small bit of advise...feel free to ignore me.

I find a lot of people just assume that anybody could be sent out to spot with no instruction. I've seen a lot of problems over the years with spotters wandering around while people are trying to throw, making incorrect rulings, etc. I lot of people actually prefer not to have spotters, sometimes it is less hassle to just look for the discs. I know the first time I volunteered to help at a PDGA event I was a noob, and they sent me out to spot with no instruction. I had no more idea than the man on the moon what I was doing and got yelled at, first for moving looking for a disc while the rest of the card waited for me to stop wandering around, then for not looking for a disc until the entire card threw and not being able to find someones disc. It was frustrating.

You might want to think about giving the spotters some directions, especially if there are any OB rulings on the holes they are spotting.

i was going to ask this myself.

i understand the etiquette of not moving while others are throwing, but otherwise i am not versed in enough PDGA rules to be fielding any questions.

while were at it, is there specific gear to wear (polo shirt and pants???)

i'm sure i'll think of a few more questions before the event happens.

Let me enhance Ron's explanation by saying, you can bring anything that you'll be able to get out of the way quickly in the event a disc is headed your way. Please also refrain from bringing a cooler full of beer, it is not allowed during PDGA events and I don't want any of the players making a stink about our spotters getting wasted (we had an incident a couple years ago at the mid-natls) so please also refrain from getting wasted (until after the event) if that is what you want to do.

i don't plan to get tanked, but i would like to throw back a couple (discreetly i guess) while i'm being humbled.

since 12 will be in the C placement, if i do end up there, would the nook on the right where the (i'm guessing) B placement is be an acceptable spot to set up shop?

if so, hows about i bring a cooler and stock it with water bottles so they can be handed out to everyone making their way to 13?

Redarmy, I'll be at Endicott both days this weekend. Look for the red truck with the silver ladder rack. If you can stop by I'll show you the best place to camp out during the round. I've spotted every year of the Open at Endicott. Spotters are there for only 1 reason and it's not to make rulings. That is for the players, TDs or officials. Unless the spotter happens to be an official and has the TDs permission to make calls.
