The first installment of the “Dude Chronicles” found our hero, local Disc Golf evangelist Mark “The Dude” Dudenhoeffer, heading out to play a few new courses south of the St. Louis area. In our second chapter, The Dude goes where no golfer has ever gone before…Underground! Crystal City Underground, a 200+ acre former sand mine being turned into a sports & entertainment complex, has, due to the work of The Dude and his fellow frisbee-tarians, added a 9-Hole Disc Golf Course to their subterranean pleasure palace.

Our crack team of researchers has assured us that this is the world’s first underground Disc Golf Course, right here in our own backyard. In addition to golf, there are sand volleyball courts, air soft tournaments, beer and beverage sales on site, an underground lake featuring barge rides, and all sorts of other bells and whistles that make this a “must” for any local golf enthusiast. Many of the details are still in flux: additional lighting is being added, some holes will change their shape as things develop, and, currently, the complex is only open to golfers on Friday evenings from 7-11pm, when the sand volleyball league also takes place. But even at this early stage in its development, The Underground is truly a “kid in the candy store” kind of experience.

On January 28th, after the 3rd Ice Bowl Series event @ West City Park, The Dude led an intrepid band of merry makers into the maw of this exciting new Disc Golf development- and (as far as we know anyway ) we all made it out alive! An unbelievable time…flashing LED lights tracing the arc of the discs into the darkness devouring the fairways; the resonant sounds of fellow golfers’ successes and failures while navigating the winding rock-wall fairways; the cool, moist mine air filling one’s lungs with the sweet elixir of an enjoyable evening; the frosty beverages flowing freely from the well-stocked cooler (the drinks are actually $2, but “flowing freely” just has that alliterative ring to it!). Donations in excess of $200 were also raised for CCU owner/operator Tom Kerr’s Charity “Jobs, Jobs, Jobs” in Jefferson County, which dovetailed nicely with the charity theme of the Ice Bowls. The next planned event is a Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 5th- the day after the 23rd Annual Hazelwood Ice Bowl…come on down and get subterranean!

As with any undertaking of this size, The Dude did not do it alone, and he wanted to make sure that all the folks who helped make this dream a reality were properly recognized: Dave and Jen Garver, Greg Van Horn, Dan Fritz, Daniel Doss, Matt Augustin, Alan Amos, Aaron Walther, Greg Dohogne, Nathan Sauer, CCU owner/operator Tom Kerr, and everyone else who had a hand in this- you have officially entered the pantheon of STL-Disc Golf Legends…thanks for making this happen! Stop by the STLDGC forums to keep up with all of the news on The Underground.

1/26/12: Monthly Letter from the RCF President (Jan. 2012)

I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays! We have had a very mild winter so far, with very little snow. We’ve had big crowds at all RCF Events from October forward – thanks for all of your participation, and thanks to all of our hard-working volunteers!

Here is a list of the many things we are working on, as well as general comments:

*Bridgeton: On hold right now because Bridgeton is still clearing debris from some of the roads. They would like to talk to us in late February. Stay tuned. We have 18 baskets reserved for this course. Tim Wiegard and I will work with Dave McCormack on this one.
*Other Course Inquiries: Zach Schaeffer would like to get discussion going on Willmore Park in STL City. Steve Hoog from the board will work with him to see if the Aldermen and Parks Dept. has any interest in a course. There are still redesign discussions occurring about Unger Park. Another new possibility is St. Charles Community College – we have been contacted by the new President there and both the RCF and the St. Charles County Disc Golf Club will be involved in the initial discussions – these talks will start in April.
*Ice Bowls: We have had great attendance and charitable contributions given at the Ice Bowl Series Events. Thanks to all! This Saturday (1/28) will be the RCF’s 3rd Ice Bowl Series Event, held at West City Park in Festus in conjunction with the Jefferson County Sharpshooters. The RCF will also be holding its Ice Bowl Series Raffle after the round…be there to hear your number called and get some great stuff!
*March C-Tiers: Besides all of the Ice Bowls and the Valentine’s Massacre (2/11 @ JB), we have done a lot of work setting up our PDGA events – the March C-Tiers were a big priority in January to get sanctioned with the PDGA. Tim Wiegard will TD both tournaments that weekend. Tournament registration for the two events is available at the ProShop on our website.
*STL Open: We also are doing preliminary planning for the STL Open. We do need volunteers to come forward to help us as we will be handling 4+ courses on multiple days. Talks with sponsors on player’s packages is just beginning.
*Collegiate Qualifier: Steve Kleiber has done a great job bringing The Gateway Collegiate Classic qualifier to STL! Click the link for details – it will occur on the first weekend of March. We know disc golf teams from Arkansas and Purdue will play.
*Tee Signs: Tim Wiegard is following progress on these closely. We have the second version of the JB signs and are getting close to completion of JB. Initial signs for Endicott are next.
*PDGA Affiliate Club: I signed us up as a PDGA Affiliate Club for 2012. This means you can save $5 on your PDGA renewal or new membership!
*World’s Committee: I have not called our first meeting yet as I was hoping to have that initial conversation with the PDGA; however, I cannot seem to get Brian Graham to call us back – yet. Admittedly, there has also been a ton to do just prepping this year and laying the groundwork for the tournaments in 2012.
*Thanks: I would like to call out a few people who are doing a lot of work for the club. Steve Kleiber who, besides being Treasurer, is jumping in helping with sign-ups and TD reports, and of course, the Collegiate Qualifier. Bob Waidmann who is doing the heavy lifting on the club merchandise. Ted Spies who always amazes with the Club website, and now a great Facebook Page! Steve Hoog with secretary duties, and jumping in to help with Willmore Park discussions. Greg Dohogne who always helps at tournament central and is always working ahead on upcoming tournament flyers. Tim Wiegard who is pushing on the tee signs and stepped up as TD for the March C-Tiers. Chris Kinsella who is pulling in new members and is a valuable history source of info for me and the club. And of course, any of you who step up and TD or volunteer at an event (Mark Dudenhoeffer, Francis Albanese, etc.). Thanks!!!
*And finally, who is Dave West?: I have heard that some people are asking who I am (PDGA #752)- I was around more in the fall as I held down the fort at the pavilions at the Club Championships in October, and I was at the morning of the Holly Daze in December. I do admit I am not a big winter disc golf player – I spent 23 years in a row coaching basketball between November and March, and now since that is over, I spend that same amount of time doing volunteer disc golf duties (Treasurer last year and President this year). I have always run a single day tournament in Effingham, Illinois every September for the last 8 years, but am now amazed at how much work it is to handle over 20 events for the RCF. You will see me again on the morning of the Hazelwood Ice Bowl (2/4) – I like to help Bob out there, and then I will also be a volunteer at the March C-Tiers, and I will be the TD of the STL Open.

Dave West

Local Disc Golf ‘Legend’ (just ask him!), JB Course Captain, and all-around good guy Mark Dudenhoeffer enjoys playing quite a bit of disc golf. He also enjoys snapping a few photos while he’s on the course. Between those obscene looking, but highly effective, forehand putts- known around JB as the “Dudie Putt” (perhaps it’s ‘Doodie Putt?’ ) – and the pictures he takes…well: let’s just say the man gets off some good shots! Hopefully, he’ll be a regular contributor to this page and you’ll be seeing more from “The Dude” in the future.

Our first installment covers The Dude’s late December road trip to play a few relatively new courses just outside of the St. Louis area. Word has it that the group left the south side at 6am, and by the end of the day they had played 54 holes of golf and put a few hundred miles on the car. I can’t identify everyone in the pictures (although i can identify at least one person NOT in the pictures…thanks for the call, guys), but it looks like a group of RCF sharp shooters headed south to go birdie hunting! *EDIT- The Dude has let me know that the group consisted of Greg Doh, Neil Brown, Doug Bickell, Greg “G-Man” Van Horn, and himself*

The first stop was the Lion’s Club DGC in Rolla…you’ll see some ‘action shots’ from what i believe is hole 11 in the slideshow. They then headed east to hit Potosi City Park located in, you guessed it, Potosi, MO. The last stop on the tour was the brand-new, Dave McCormack (Gateway Disc Sports) designed course in Farmington, MO. The course at Engler Park appears to be a beauty, with a good mix of open and wooded holes. If these pictures are any indication, it also looks quite picturesque as the the sun sets!

The Dude reports that the Lion’s Club course in Rolla was his personal favorite but that all 3 provided a good test of golf skills, with copious water and OB hazards in play on both the Farmington and Potosi Courses. You can Click Here to see more photos from the Lion’s Club course, or follow the links above to find out more on each course!

12/26/11: Monthly Letter from the RCF President (Dec. 2011)

I hope everyone is enjoying a great holiday season. The club is growing again with many new members – we have over 330 signed up already for 2012. Listed below are items about the club you might find interesting:

    * Take a look at our website – Ted Spies is doing an outstanding job of improving every tab on the website! I really like what he has done with the courses tab! I met Ted at the Club Championships for the first time. He had already offered to help improve the website, so I asked him to jump in and help. He has done a great job and I do hope you take a good look.
* We had a very good turnout of 70 disc golfers at the Holly Daze tournament at Sioux Passage park. Francis Albanese did a great job as TD. Steve Kleiber and Bob Waidmann helped with signups, Bob brought in the merchandise, and Corby O’Brien handled the food.
* We did a physical inventory of our club merchandise in early December. We had 950 discs in our inventory on December 4th. The Discraft discs had been purchased the most over the past 2 months, followed by Innova. Thanks to Steve Kleiber and Bob Waidmann for helping with this 5 hour effort! And, thanks to Bob for storing the merchandise for us!
* We are putting together the sanctioning form for the St. Louis Open this week. Our A-Tier tournament will be held May 5-6, 2012. As in the past, it will be a pro/am tournament.
* We are looking into helping to host a collegiate qualifier in the STL area. Steve Kleiber has been our focal person looking into this possibility. I sure wish we had college disc golf teams when I was in college!
* We are forming a committee to look into what it would take to host a World’s event in some future year. If you are interested, let me know.
* Bridgeton: Now that the tornado cleanup in Bridegton is slowing down, Bridgeton is ready to talk again. The board knows we need just one voice going to Bridgeton in the future or else we will not get a course put in. We are working with Dave McCormack to ensure we have one voice. The board has decided to make Dave McCormack the main contact with Bridgeton, and Tim Wiegard and I will accompany Dave (as RCF reps) when we meet with Bridgeton. We are also trying to arrange a discussion with Don Moellenbeck and Tim Finan to hear their thoughts about course design before making a final decision on course design. Dave McCormack will be the primary course designer, and the ultimate decision maker on the initial course design. We hope to get a course installed in Bridgeton in 2012!
* Greg Dohogne has done a great job of putting together the 2012 initial schedule. We should have the schedules posted at the courses soon. Greg also helps in all capacities of the club – when and wherever help is needed.
* Steve Hoog has helped us with minutes of meetings, and will also help us keep our meetings moving along. Steve brings us good experience and history with his time working with the Kansas City Disc Golf Club.
* See our schedule on our website. We have multiple ice bowl tournaments coming up in Janaury. Be charitable, and have fun!
* Our next meeting is Monday, January 9th, at 6pm. The location will be posted on the website.

Have a great holiday season,

Dave West

The Holly Daze Tournament went down on the 10th of December…if you missed it (or maybe you just need a little help to remember it!) here’s a by-the-numbers breakdown of the fun:

70, 22, 36, 2, 15k, 40, 5, 0

70 golfers showed up for the 22nd installment of the Holly Daze, held this year at Sioux Passage- 36 holes in 2 rounds covering over 15,000 feet of golf across the signature hills and valleys of one of St. Louis’ finest courses. Layer-shedding 40-plus degree temperatures; a tasty $5 hot lunch on-site; and Zero – the number of Cali’s Neil needed to finish the Putter Challenge sidegame! (see video)

click pic for slideshow

The legendary Santa Laker made an appearance in his perfectly placed (and fully stocked!) LakerLand encampment near hole 4, and both the tree and Santa were loaded with presents…

From a competitive golf standpoint, some guy named Nikko Locastro won the Open Division. We’re still waiting for full scoring details, but i believe he threw 101 shots over the 2 rounds. Not far behind was Roger R., which i think makes the second RCF event in a row he’s placed 2nd to Nikko. In the Pro Old Guys Division (sorry fellas), i hear John Lloyd held off a charging Joe Jaegers to win by a stroke in a battle that wasn’t settled until the last throw of their final hole. Check the message board for scoring details and the Amateur Division winners in the days to come, and click the pic of Santa Laker to see a slideshow of a few more photos from the event.
